Native Habitat: Fresh Water marshes, edges of ponds, lakes & streams

Flowering Characteristics: Violet- blue flower spikes extending above the water.
Native Range: Ontario to Nova Scotia & New England; S. to northern Florida;  W. to Missouri and Oklahoma; north to Minnesota.
Flowering expected: June - November
Comments:   According to the Audubon Field Guide, the seeds can be eaten and the young leafstalks cooked as greens. Deer also
feed on these plants. The name suggests that this plant, as well as the fish known as pickerel, occupy the same habitat.

Comments: Small greenish brown scaly flowers, the clusters diverging from one point on the side of the stalk near the top. This
common marsh plant is one of many rushes, most of which are found in wet soil or water. Muskrats feed on the rootstalks, the birds find shelter among the stems.
